How to Create a Favicon for Your Website
Make the small icon that appears in browser tabs, bookmarks and phone home screens, in every size you need.
A favicon is the little icon next to your site name in a browser tab. It helps visitors find your tab among many, and it makes bookmarks and home-screen shortcuts look professional.
Which files do you need?
- favicon.ico, used by older browsers and many tools. It can hold 16, 32 and 48 pixel versions.
- PNG icons at 16 and 32 pixels for modern browsers.
- A 180 pixel Apple touch icon for iPhones and iPads.
- 192 and 512 pixel icons for Android and installable web apps.
Steps
- Prepare a square image of your logo, ideally 512 × 512 pixels or larger.
- Open the Favicon Generator and select the image.
- Choose a background and rounded corners if you want them.
- Click Create favicons. A ZIP file downloads, and the HTML lines to add are shown on the page.
- Upload the files to the root folder of your site and paste the HTML lines inside the head section of your pages.
Design tips
- A favicon is tiny. Use a simple shape or one letter, not a detailed picture.
- Use strong contrast between the symbol and its background so it stays visible on light and dark browser themes.
- Avoid text longer than one or two letters.
Checking it
Open your site in a new tab. If you still see the old icon, clear the browser cache or wait a little, because browsers keep favicons for a long time.
